Hemmed In
"You have searched me, O Lord, and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before,
and You lay Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain." Psalm 139:1-6
While on a recent visit to the California coast to visit family, I was reminded, even the vast Pacific ocean is "hemmed in".
The coastline, though seemingly measureless, sets a boundary clearly seen. Here the land and the sea form a visible (and enjoyable) line.
The Psalmist spoke of the Lord Who surrounds us. He says we are known, understood, heard and held. We are "hemmed in" by God's astounding character.
God knows the width, depth and height of who we are. And like the coastline, His love and mercy are unceasingly breaking like waves upon the shores of our lives. And beyond this, His very hand is upon us
It may seem at times that things are "out of control" and there's no sense of those boundaries and blessings. But Who God is does not depend on where we are, what we face or how we are doing. The Lord is our Helper and He has us hemmed in!
"There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God." I Samuel 2:2
