Duet in the Dark
"But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed."
Acts 16:25-26
Having been arrested and beaten for their ministry in Philippi, Paul and Silas were chained in the darkness. They were prisoners awaiting an unknown outcome.
The duo could have protested their treatment or demanded legal representation. They could have questioned their fate. Instead they responded by praying and giving God praise!
This duet of prayer and praise in the dark shook things up. In an hour when it seemed things couldn't get worse a breakthrough occurred. When pain was intense and uncertainty roared, prison doors opened and chains were loosened. Miracles are God's specialty!
Not only was their captivity taken captive, their witness captivated those who could have escaped. Telling the suicidal jailer "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here." (Acts 16:27-28)
In times of uncertainty, inhumanity, distress or darkness the best thing to do is to call on the Lord and to worship Him. God is able to shake what is shaking us. Diagnosis, difficulty, despair, dashed dreams...none of these are beyond God's delivering power and presence.
Keep on praying and singing,
